Established in 1970 the Department has continuously been the home for world-class research programs in areas ranging from microbial pathogenesis and model organism genetics to cancer biology. Our mission is to advance the knowledge of the fundamental causes, means of prevention and treatment of human diseases.

We are dedicated to graduate training and are committed to providing a highly interactive atmosphere in which students and post-doctoral fellows will thrive.

Professor Erich Mackow has been invited to present the keynote address at the IX International Conference on Hantaviruses to be held in Beijing, China in June 2013.

Distinguished Professor Eckard Wimmer has been honored by U.S. Congressman Tim Bishop for his contributions to the community by bestowing on him a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition.

The Eckard Wimmer Graduate Student Scholarship is established by friends and associates of Distinguished Professor Eckard Wimmer.
